How can choosing a lower-sheen paint finish help in high-traffic family areas?

Published:

Lower-sheen paints like eggshell or matte are kinder to walls in two ways. First, they hide small imperfections better. In busy hallways, kids’ rooms, or family living spaces, walls take hits – tiny dents, roller marks, uneven patches. A lower sheen doesn’t reflect light as sharply, so these flaws don’t jump out.

Second, modern low-sheen paints are often still washable, especially those labelled as “scrubbable” or “washable matte.” That means you can clean fingerprints, smudges and random marks without the wall turning patchy.

High-gloss or very shiny finishes show everything – every roller line, every bump, every repaired patch. They’re great for trims and doors but can be unforgiving on large wall surfaces in active areas.

So, for family zones, a tough but softer-looking finish gives you a cleaner, calmer look with less effort.
