Why is dragging furniture across floors a bad habit, even on durable surfaces?

Published:

Dragging furniture grinds any grit under the legs right into the floor surface. Even “durable” floors like tiles, vinyl or laminate can get scratched, chipped or dented this way. On wooden floors, deep marks and long scars are very common results of dragging.

The damage might not show immediately with one move, but repeated shifting slowly eats away at finishes, leaving dull paths or obvious drag lines. On tiles, it can chip edges or loosen grout over time.

It’s always better to lift furniture slightly if possible, use sliders under the legs, or at least place blankets, cardboard or mats under heavy pieces before moving them. Felt pads on the base of chair and table legs also help prevent damage from daily small movements.

Your floor is a big investment. A few extra minutes of care when rearranging can save you from expensive repairs or early replacement.
