Roofs are more dangerous than they look. Slopes, loose debris, wet patches and fragile tiles can cause slips in a second. A fall from even a modest height can mean serious injury. Most roofs aren’t designed to be walked on regularly, especially by people without proper gear.
Besides personal safety, walking in the wrong spots can crack tiles, loosen shingles, dent metal sheets or damage waterproof layers. You might go up to “have a look” and come down having created new issues without realising it.
Professionals use harnesses, proper footwear and know where to step. They’re also insured for this kind of work. As a homeowner, it’s usually better to inspect from the ground with binoculars, from windows, or by checking inside the attic.
If you really need close inspection or repairs, hiring someone trained is almost always cheaper than hospital bills and roof fixes combined.
