Why is it important to clean behind large appliances at least once a year?

Published:

Behind fridges, washing machines and stoves, dust, lint, food crumbs and sometimes even small spills quietly build up. You don’t see any of it in daily life, but it impacts both hygiene and safety.

Dust and fluff around electrical parts or compressor coils can cause appliances to run hotter and less efficiently, leading to higher energy bills and shorter lifespans. In some cases, excessive dust around hot components can even become a minor fire risk.

Food crumbs and spills attract insects and pests. Ants, cockroaches and other unwanted guests love hiding in warm, dark spots behind big appliances, especially in the kitchen.

Pulling each major appliance out once a year (or twice, if you can manage it) and giving the floor and back panels a proper vacuum and wipe keeps things under control. While you’re at it, you can also check hoses, cords and plugs for any wear or damage.

It’s not a glamorous job, but those hidden corners say a lot about how healthy your home really is.
