How often should you wipe down light switches and door handles?

Published:

Light switches and door handles are touched every single day, often by multiple people, but they’re easy to forget when cleaning. A good habit is to wipe them down at least once a week, and more often during flu season or when someone is unwell at home.

You don’t need anything fancy – a soft cloth with a mild cleaner or disinfectant is usually enough. Avoid soaking them; just a light wipe is fine. Focus on frequently used spots: main door handle, bathroom handles, bedroom switches, and kitchen switches near cooking areas.

Regular cleaning keeps them from getting grimy, sticky or discoloured over time. It also quietly cuts down on germs travelling from person to person through touch.

Because the job is quick, you can add it to another routine task. For example, every time you mop or dust a room, take twenty extra seconds to wipe its switches and handles. That small extra step keeps things feeling fresher and more cared for.
