How can discoloured patches on roofing material signal early trouble?

Published:

Discoloured patches on roofing – darker streaks, lighter faded zones, or odd stains – can be early clues that something is off. Dark streaks might suggest algae or moss growth, which holds moisture and slowly wears down material. Very light or bare-looking patches on shingles could mean protective granules have worn away, leaving the surface more vulnerable to sun and rain.

If one area looks different from the rest, it might also indicate water pooling, past repairs, or damage from falling branches. On metal roofs, rust-coloured spots are clear warnings that protective coatings have failed.

Discolouration alone doesn’t always mean an emergency, but it’s a prompt to look closer. Combine what you see outside with what you notice inside – stains on nearby ceilings or walls, damp smells, or changes after storms.

Spotting these patches early gives you the chance to clean, treat or repair small areas before the problem spreads.
